9 Places in Your Home You’re Probably Not Vacuuming… But Should Be

by Shark Clean

A great vacuum cleaner is just for carpet, right? Well, if you have a multifunctional vacuum cleaning system with cyclonic, bagless power, you can clean just about every surface in your home.

Using the appropriate attachments in the right areas, you can perform the job of a duster or cloth in seconds with your own vacuum cleaner. And rather than simply transferring dust and dirt to other areas of your home, you’ll be permanently removing them — which is essential if you have allergy sufferers in the home.

Most people won’t vacuum these areas, but doing so can deliver exceptional results and reduce the burden of household cleaning.

1. Windowsills

Windowsills are known for collecting dust, dead insects and pollen — particularly during colder months when you can’t open your windows as often as you’d like. To ensure that you don’t cause scratches whilst vacuuming your windowsills, use a brush attachment.

2. Fridges

Deep cleaning a fridge can take a great deal of time and effort. But you can save time by vacuuming debris from inside your fridges with a long hose or crevice tool. And while you’re at it, you can remove the dust that collects on fridge coils. Keeping your fridge coils clean and free from contaminants will ensure your fridge is always performing at its best.

3. Speakers

Surround sound in your home might have sounded like a good idea in the store, but your mind was probably changed when you realised just how much dust they attract. Rather than struggle on chairs with a cloth in your hand, use the long attachment that came with your vacuum cleaner to keep all your speakers dust and dirt free.

4. Mattresses

Ideally, you should be giving all your mattresses a thorough clean once a month — otherwise you could be giving dust mites a bed for the night. Strip your mattress, and beat it thoroughly (preferably outside. Using a variety of tools and vacuum cleaner accessories, systematically vacuum every square inch of your mattress.

5. Blinds

Whether you have Venetian or vertical blinds, keeping them clean can be a fiddly, time-consuming job at the best of times. But you can save time, and your back, by using one of the long attachments that came with your vacuum cleaner. The crevice tool is probably the most suited to the job, as it will extend the reach of your arm by at least two feet. This accessory is also perfectly suited to accessing the small areas between individual slats.

6. Curtains and drapes

Taking curtains and drapes down for washing should be an annual job. However, you can keep on top of dirt, insects and dust by using the longer vacuum tools in your home.

7. Electrical equipment

Any type of electrical equipment creates an electrical charge that attracts dust. Rather than spend hours painstakingly removing dust by hand from these devices, use the various attachments that came with your vacuum cleaner. If you’re worried about scratching delicate surfaces such as TV screens, use a brush attachment or cover the edges of the tool with a microfibre cloth.

Top tip: The smaller vacuum cleaner attachments that often come with handheld models are perfect for removing hidden dust and debris from inside computer keyboards.

8. Cleaning tools

Yes, believe it or not, you should be cleaning your household cleaning tools regularly. After all, your kitchen brush won’t be very effective if it’s already covered in dust before you start using it. Use the various attachments on your vacuum cleaner to clean brushes, brooms and even the vacuum cleaner itself.

9. Drawers and wardrobes

The insides of drawers and wardrobes are real dust hotspots, yet they are rarely part of any weekly or monthly cleaning schedule. You can make accessing the darkest recesses of drawers and wardrobes easier by using the crevice attachment of your vacuum cleaner. Performing this task once a week should reduce overall dust levels throughout your home.

With a powerful, functional and efficient vacuum cleaner by your side, there’s virtually nothing in your home you can’t keep dust-free.
